Ingredients (Makes 4 Burgers):

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juicy burgers)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 4 burger buns (brioche or potato buns work great)
  • 4 slices of American cheese (or cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • Pickles, lettuce, tomato, onions (optional toppings)
  • Burger sauce (see below)

Burger Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp hot sauce (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Sauce: Mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl and refrigerate until needed.
  2. Preheat the Pan: Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add a little oil.
  3. Toast the Buns: Spread butter on the inside of the buns and toast them in the skillet until golden brown. Set aside.
  4. Form the Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal balls (about ¼ lb each).
  5. Smash the Burgers: Place a beef ball onto the hot skillet, then use a spatula (with wax paper or another spatula on top for pressure) to about 3/4-inch thick.
  6. Season & Cook: Sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powder. Cook for 2 minutes until the edges crisp.
  7. Flip & Melt Cheese: Flip the patties and immediately place a slice of cheese on top. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  8. Assemble: Spread the sauce on the toasted buns, add the burger patty, then top with pickles, onions, lettuce, or any toppings you like.
  9. Serve & Enjoy! Perfect with fries, chips, or an ice-cold drink. 🍻
